Horsham Spotlight: Local Charities In The Community

We’re lucky to have such a wonderful community of people here in Horsham, including some amazing charities which are doing their best to give back and help those in need.

It’s been a tough year for many because of the pandemic, so we are shining a spotlight on some local charities that have been working hard during this time to bring some joy to Horsham and help the local community.

Let us know in the comments of any local charities you’ve noticed working extra hard and we’ll add them to the list below. Don’t forget to keep up to date with the latest Horsham information on our Twitter and Instagram pages.

Horsham Matters

Horsham Matters are a well known charity in Horsham, with a mission to help provide food, fuel and shelter to the local community. They have a huge superstore in Horsham town that sells a range of furniture, clothing, electrical items and much more.

During the pandemic the store hasn’t been able to be consistently open, so they are now selling the majority of their goods online. As well as this, they’ve continued to collect food bank donations outside of their door and deliver them to those who are in need in Horsham.

They have also run a wide range of fundraising activities during this time, such as a charity yoga class. The funds for these events go towards places such as the Horsham District food bank to help provide food for those who are struggling.

Take a look at their Facebook page for the latest fundraising information and shop online here.

Rotary Club of Horsham

Throughout the year the Rotary Club of Horsham holds a range of events to help the community, including the popular pancake race! However, over the last year this hasn’t been able to happen, so instead the team have been holding a range of virtual and COVID safe events to help raise funds for the local community and keep everyone’s spirits up.

Recent events and fundraisers have included:

  • Easter hat competition
  • Writing competitions for children
  • A car based scavenger hunt
  • Halloween trail
  • Toy collection at Christmas for families in need

Horsham Community Responders

Horsham Community Responders are a vital part of the local community, aiding the ambulance service to provide life saving care to those who are in immediate need. They attend emergency calls for:

  • Cardiac arrests
  • Collapsed and unconscious people
  • Chest pains
  • Any breathing difficulties
  • Minor trauma
  • Medical emergencies

During the pandemic, the volunteers have been going above and beyond to help the local community in challenging conditions. These include:

  • Responding to 999 calls in extra PPE to stay safe
  • Volunteering to help at the vaccination centre at South East Coast Ambulance Service HQ in Crawley
  • Helping emergency responders get vaccinated
  • Running welfare vehicles to give the frontline ambulance crews the chance to get a hot drink or snack
  • Providing support in moving PPE and other urgent equipment to where they are needed
  • Taking temperatures at South East Coast Ambulance Service HQ to help protect staff at the Emergency Operations Centre
